Is Mission Safe? Difficult?

Is mission safe?

  • It is not possible to simply answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’
  • Only a very small percentage of mission workers are harmed
  • The greatest risk to death and injury is from vehicle accidents

Risk of harm depends on where you work and the situation at that time

You may need to take precautions against some of the following:

  • Break down of civil order
  • Unhygienic conditions and poor medical facilities
  • Kidnapping
  • Assault and robbery
  • Natural disasters

If you plan to work in an area of considerable risk:

  • It is very important that you count the cost, not only for yourself but also for your immediate and extended family
  • It is important that your agency has:
    • A security and crisis management policy
    • A method to assess risk
    • Procedures for developing and implementing contingency plans

Is mission difficult?

Mission work in another culture usually means giving up some things:

  • Familiar home comforts and foods
  • Time spent with extended family and friends

Depending on where you serve, the living conditions and climate may also be quite difficult and challenging

However, there are also many benefits of working in other countries:

  • Making new friends from around the world
  • Helping people in need who do not have easy access to good help
  • Experiencing other cultures
  • Being able to live and share the message of Jesus with those who have not heard or experienced it
